To quote from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical
value – you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you – daft as a bush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have “lost”. What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

  • Annual Ft Lauderdale Trip

My trip to Ft Lauderdale was rather uneventful this year, no malicious woundings in the Metro, not falling in love with some guy I barely knew… or even lust.

I took long naps each day, watched more TV that I have in months and got more of a tan… all in all, I had a very relaxing vacation. Considering that my last 4 trips were taken with other people, this is EXACTLY what I needed.

The resort, Pineapple Point was stunning. The rooms (they upgraded me to a Suite) were spectacular, the grounds well kept and the service beyond compare. They saw to almost every need I had before I knew I had it. Bikes for guests to use if they wanted to, an exercise room, water in each room. It was simply lovely.

The bad news: I’m pretty sure I was the only single guy there. Everyone else was there with their partner/lover. So it wasn’t quite as frisky a weekend as I’d hoped, but it was still nice.

  • I Saw Iron Man

I really liked it. Great special effects, they stuck to the story line that we know and love in the comic books, and Robert Downey Jr was magnificent. He really played the part of Tony Stark quite well. I thought Gweneth Paltrow did a nice job in her role as Pepper too, but I hope the public doesn’t expect a romance – as that would not be in the script.

Previews that were before the movie included the Incredible Hulk, Narnia, Adam Sandler’s new flick, Mike Meyer’s new flick and the Happening – with Mark Walberg. I thought the preview for the Incredible Hulk looked great and the Happening might be worth seeing.

  • 4 Months of Success – and many returns

This marks month four of exceeding the financial goals for the new company. This means that we are doing better than we had planned in our budget – billing out approximately 10% more a month that we had anticipated.

The best part? We’re just getting started! Clients keep calling us for work, and despite the other company’s hilarious attempts to roadblock old clients files, we’re stacking up projects right and left.

In May we launch our Website and will be sending out a Marketing letter (we didn’t have to hire anyone at $50,000 plus 3% of advertising income to accomplish these things either) that will drum up even more business and hopefully lead to more growth in the company.

Honesty, determination, and a belief in a power greater than ourselves is what is helping us to continue our success. Thanks go to God, and everyone who believed we could do it.

  • Broadway

So I had my first weekend trip to NYC to see a Broadway show. I took the train up, as i find it much more relaxing than the airplane. I had downloaded the movie: Starfall to watch on my way up which was very enjoyable, and there was a cute guy sitting across from me too – that’s always a bonus. I arrived around 12:30, had lunch at the Ruby Tuesday that was right near the hotel (stayed at the Newark Airport Residence Inn) and checked in early. Took a 2 hour nap and waited for my friend Suzanne to arrive. Suzanne and I had dinner at the JW Prime Steakhouse (at the Marriott at the airport) and then headed back to our suite. The two bedroom suite was very nice, though we hardly used the kitchen at all.

The plan on Saturday was to spend the morning shopping, before we headed off for Times Square; but when we were preparing to leave we discovered someone had broken into Suzanne’s car over night, the drivers side window had been smashed in and glass was everywhere. They were apparently looking for her GPS system, which she had in the room with us. They left her Ipod, her CD’s, and DVDs all in the car, so the only loss was the window and shopping time.

Time Square was a real treat, my first visit there and I really liked it (despite the people). I could spend a day there shopping.

In the theater, waiting for Suzanne to arrive out of the mile long ladies restroom I swear I saw Leslie Jordan who had a recurring role on Will and Grace over the years, that was a treat in itself. The play, Young Frankenstein, was stupendous, even with two understudies standing in for the lead male role and the Inga role, it was still VERY good. Suzanne and I especially loved Igor, he stole the show.

Saturday night we headed to a local mexican restaurant that Suzanne loves and met up with a guy that she went to high school with and his girlfriend, then it was off to an AA meeting, which was also very good.

Sunday, Suzanne took off fairly early and I headed back in the afternoon. All in all, it was a great trip and I hope to spend more time the next time I go see a show.

  • Sleep

I would just like to sleep in…

1 god damn mother fucking day I would like to sleep in…

    just once a week

that should not be that much to ask for.

  • Physical

So I had a physical in November. No reason other than just the annual thing…

I explained to my doctor, as I do to all doctors/dentists/pharmacists, that I’m in recovery – clean and sober 13 years. And yet at the end of my physical she handed me a document to improve my health that included:

    Don’t smoke
    Moderate alcohol
    No drug use

If she was deaf, it wasn’t clearly pointed out to me, so I don’t know what her issue is.

She did notice that there is apparently a growth on my right testicle, something I didn’t notice… but now I can’t help but notice. But I wonder at this point, if she didn’t pay attention to my drug/drinking history.. is there anything to see on my testicle or is she just trying to make me paranoid… which I am now.

  • A Shoestring

Somewhere in the last 30 years I’ve forgotten how to properly tie my shoes. I don’t know where the knowledge has gone or why it has left but it’s just not in my head anymore. My shoes come untied 2 – 3 times a day, this is even with a double knot.

I do realize that I spent about 5 years exclusively wearing boots – which made playing tennis interesting – maybe that’s where the knowledge got mad and decided to slip away unnoticed until now.

I do hope it comes back.

  • On the edge

I just got back from a cruise, 7 days in the Caribbean. Not my cup of tea to tell the truth. I did not enjoy myself at all. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but certainly nothing I would do again. We had a balcony state room, which on first glance is a good thing.

But as I leaned against the rail of the balcony, my thoughts are to throw myself off. The idea is immediately dismissed, I’d be rescued in the daylight and likely be locked up. But when the thought returns at night, I know I could do it. I could end it all right there.

So the question to pose is “How?”.

How do I end up with these thoughts at 13 years sober, with the best job I’ve ever had, the best life you could wish for, a host of friends, accomplishments and tales… yet not enough to make me want to stay.

So something is wrong, maybe chemically, or spiritually, or I suppose it could be anything at all.

Now this is not me reaching out for help or a farewell note… it’s me looking into myself trying to figure out what is going on in my soul. Maybe all human beings think this way, maybe this is nothing out of the ordinary…

    Maybe I should write more… 😉

  • Rockets Red Glare

The 4th thing is off, for those of you that didn’t know, I had volunteered to sing with the Washington Choral Arts Society for A Capitol Fourth. A televised show in front of the Capital.

Then something came up at work, and I think I will not be able to devote to the practice or the performance the amount of energy that should be devoted to the project, so I bowed out. It is a big thing at work, so I think it was the right decision.
